The Power of Writing for Dyslexic Thinkers

“I write because I don't know what I think until I read what I say.” ― Flannery O'Connor

Introduction

Writing is a powerful tool for everyone, but it holds unique significance for dyslexic students and entrepreneurs. In this month's podcast conversation with Nick Koshnick of Vnote.ai, we explored the value of writing for dyslexic thinkers. We identified two main reasons why writing is essential:

  1. Writing for Productivity and Collaboration

  2. Writing for Clarity and Understanding

Writing for Productivity and Collaboration

Writing is indispensable for entrepreneurs and leaders, especially in today's remote work environment. It is crucial for:

  • Getting Others On Board: Writing helps in communicating ideas clearly to invite collaboration.

  • Moving Projects Forward: Clear written communication is essential for project management.

  • Professionalism: Writing is a key component of professional success.

For dyslexic thinkers, AI can be a tool that levels the playing field. As Nick Koshnick puts it, converting his spoken words into professional writing is a kind of magic that removes disadvantages and enables effective communication.

Writing for Clarity and Understanding

Writing is not just about external communication; it also helps the writer internally. Flannery O'Connor's quote, "I write because I don't know what I think until I read what I say," captures this perfectly. Writing helps in:

  • Offloading Working Memory: Dyslexic writers often struggle with working memory, and writing helps in structuring thoughts.

  • Achieving Clarity: The process of writing helps in filtering through interconnected ideas to reach a clear message.

Nick mentioned that in high school, he struggled with note-taking because he couldn't think 'fast enough' to put words on paper. Dyslexic thinkers often have strong visual and interpersonal connection abilities, but these can stand in the way of quick, linear work.

The Role of AI in Assisting Dyslexic Writers

AI tools like Vnote can significantly aid dyslexic writers in two main ways:

  1. Enhancing Productivity: AI can help in producing concise, error-free writing for professional and collaborative purposes.

  2. Facilitating Clarity: AI can assist in the process of filtering through interconnected ideas to achieve clarity.

By using a question model, AI can draw out main ideas and push them through a funnel towards clarity. This not only benefits the dyslexic thinker but also provides (gives?) the world access to their unique insights.

The Future of AI and Dyslexic Students

But what of dyslexic students and AI? We're probably far from a reality in which dyslexic students are allowed access to the kind of AI that eliminates these disadvantages for them, without suspicion. Developing AI that interacts with the students' ideas rather than bolstering it by a database of online ideas is one necessary step. Another is fostering an understanding within education, not only of the barriers that need overcoming but also of the value that needs unlocking within the dyslexic communicator. This ensures that we don't remain stuck in merely ticking the boxes of educational standards, but rather focus on encouraging humans to have and communicate their valuable ideas.

By embracing these tools, we can unlock the full potential of dyslexic thinkers, benefiting both the individuals and the broader community.
